Wirral Metro Success at Swim Conwy Autumn Meet 2018

Over the weekend of the 20/21st October 2018 Wirral Metro took 26 swimmers to Llandudno from across the squads and it was particularly pleasing to see the bulk of the swimmers coming from JD1 and JD2, in what for many was their first major full weekend gala.

Previous personal bests were swept aside in a flurry of fast racing. The boys got Metro underway in the 100 free with good PBs for Billy, Thomas Bell and James Pettener. Lucas Horton earned a top 3 place in the 13-14 age group breaking the one-minute mark in 59.48. In the girls 400 IM Hannah Pettener topped the 13-14 age group and Emma Harwood followed up with a great swim in the girls 200 fly, taking gold.

The boys 50 back continued the success with Archie Lynch taking first place and a big PB for Matthew Wentworth who showed bags of courage after his 100 free DQ.

There was race by race commentary which was great because we were now starting to hear a lot about Wirral Metro and Gia Hothersall kept the momentum going for the girls with a big PB in the girls 200 breaststroke coming second overall in the 11-12 age group and was backed up well by the other Metro girls in this age group. Ben Johnson followed up for the boys with a second place finish in the boys 800 free.

The rest of Saturday saw Alexa Murray and Millie Gidman begin their domination of the girls 9-10 and 13/14 age groups with victory in the girls 50 free with Millie Gidman getting a top-three finish in the 13-14 age group.

The girls 200 free saw four of our 11-12 age group in the top ten with strong swims from Megan, Helen and Amelie.

Sunday started in much the same way with Alexa and Millie taking the girls 100 free titles in their respective age groups. The girls 100 fly saw Metro occupy 3 of the top six places in the 11 to 12 age group with Emma, Molly and Gia all swimming well.

Strong performances continued into the afternoon with good PBs from Archie and Billy in the boys 50 free and the day was topped off by wins in the 50 fly for Millie and Alexa.

It was great to see so many of our newer swimmers coming through and competing for Metro away from home such as Helen, Kate, Alexa, Matthew, Thomas, Archie, Freddie, Borys and Lewis. They all raced really well with some great new PBs and medals to take away.

The final results saw Millie Gidman and Alexa Murray come away with the top girl awards in their age groups with top 4 finishes for Gia and Hannah with Megan and Helen also in the top ten in their age groups.

The boys 11/12 age group saw three Metro swimmers in the top ten with Archie, Ben and Thomas occupying spots 6,7 and 9. Similarly, in the 13/14 age group, there were top 6 finishes for Billy and Lee, 4th and 6th respectively. James Pettener completed the boys strong showing finishing 5th for the 15 and over boys. To top off the weekend Wirral Metro were ranked second overall out of the 17 participating clubs with well over 100 PBs. Well done to everyone on a fantastic weekend of swimming!
